gym class heroes’ next surprise

gym class heroes and hall & oats

Who knew Travis McCoy, lead singer/rapper of the indie hip hop group Gym Class Heroes was a secret fan Daryl Hall & John Oats?  Well, apparently a lot of people now!  The band has decided to do an album mixing tracks from their latest album, As Cruel As Schoolchildren, with over 40 Hall & Oats classics.  Young kids will bop their heads to the music videos as soft rock lovers pushing 40 will listen in amazement as “maneater” and “private eyes” creeps back into top 40 radio .   This is very exciting news (at least for many H&O lovers), but don’t hold your breath too long - the “match-up” (which DJ J.J. Brown who is mixing the album prefers over the commonly used term “mash-up”) will probably not be released until the end of the year.  Take a look at the video of the Heroe’s incredible Supertramp mash-up from their 2006 album…Here

happy birthday GN’R!

appetite for destructionThis month marks the 20th anniversary of Appetite For Destruction, the album that gave us “Paradise City”, “Sweet Child ‘O Mine”, “Welcome To The Jungle” and so many more Guns N’ Roses classics.  Axl Rose may have been the biggest dick in rock, but everyone from teenage girls to hard rocking Crue lovers got his appeal.  The stringy strawberry blond hair, pythonic stage presence, and complete disregard for any kind of socially accpetable behavior just made the music that much better.  The legacy this album left was pretty huge.  Although it only sold 500,000 copies in the first year of its release, it is now the second highest selling debut record in the US.  A shocking, disturbing, and hilarious tid bit is that the album’s closer “Rocket Queen” features the very true orgasmic screams of drummer Steve Adler’s girlfriend and Axl having sex in a recording studio vocal booth.  She apparently was trying to get back at Adler for cheating on her, so Axl agreed to memorialize it in the studio recording.  This may be the most fitting rock album title of all time.

timbaland to retire

timbalandThere’s no doubt that hip hop/pop music producer, Timbaland, is a talented SOB, but in a recent interview he claims that he’ll be leaving the music industry soon because “music is so boring right now” and he’s simply “too innovative.”  Alright, alright, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake owe about 87% of their recent successes to the man,  but a little bit of humility never hurt anyone.  Besides a few key tracks that are most likely already dominating the summer club scene (”Give It To Me” & “The Way I Are”), his latest album Shock Value at best received mixed reviews and wasn’t necessarily ripped from the womb of musical genius.  There was a “Sexy Back” rip off (”Release”, also w/ JT) and some weird collaborations with Fall Out Boy and The Hives.  So perhaps his assertions that he’s the king of music ingenuity ruling a land of boring artists is a wee bit ill-timed.  Prediction:  He’ll pull a Jay Z, leave the business for a little while, and then shock everyone when he comes back bigger and busier than ever.  Maybe he should have reserved the name Shock Value for his future coming-out-of-retirement album title.  Not good planning, man.
